FLAMING CHALICES

The flaming chalice is the official symbol of the Unitarian Universalist Association and its many member churches. This symbol, a flame within a chalice cup, was originally designed for the Unitarian Service Committee to support its work during WWII, and was used as a seal for documents and a badge for agents moving refugees to freedom. From that history it has accrued meanings of justice, sacrifice, courage, service, love, hope, safety. Unitarian Universalists today have many different interpretations of the flaming chalice, including the light of reason, the warmth of community, the fire of commitment, the spark of hope, and the flame of love. Many UU churches begin their gatherings and worship services with a ritual lighting of the chalice.
